Sean John Clothing is owned by Sean "Diddy" Combs who is a hip-hop mogul and Ron Burkle who is a supermarket mogul. Sean John Clothing Inc started as a man's clothing and fragrance line, but it has diversified into other things over the years.

From the company's name, it is clear it takes its name from Combs' first and middle names. Sean Combs represents the brand together with others, mostly musicians. These include rappers The Game, Nelly, T.I., and Fabulous, other musicians such as Daddy Yankee and Wisin & Yandel, athletes Tristan Sooklal and NBA's Dwyane Wade and fashion models Kevin Navayne and Tyson Beckford.

The company was started in 1998. Being in the hip-hop industry, it was not hard for the company to get commercial success. Sean John Clothing started as an urban clothing label, but it has grown into an international brand. Today, annual revenues exceed an impressive $100 million.

Sean John Clothing has won various awards and recognitions. The company was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America, or CFDA, award in 2004 after it had appeared in the award ceremonies since 2000. The category it won was Men's Designer of the Year.

In 2008, he purchased Liz Claiborne's Enyce for $20,000,000 and during the same year, he made Dawn Robertson of Old Navy, a man who had a lot of experience in the field, the president of Sean John Clothing Inc.

Sean John is not into men's clothes only. The company is also involved in Sean Comb's high-selling men's perfume such as I Am King and Unforgivable, the company is involved in urban fashion accessories such as belts, it is involved in shoes, hoods, hats, T-shirts, suits, outerwear, etc. The company started a women's line in 2003, but the men's line is the biggest source of money for the company.

Sean John Clothing has not been without controversies. In 2003, Sean Combs was under a prolonged media attack after it was revealed that he had used sweatshop labor to produce some items in his clothing line. Among the complaints by the NLC or the National Labor Committee were that the employees had bee subjected to body searches, that the company had fired employees by virtue of their being pregnant and that the pay was peanuts. Another controversy was in 2006 when it is alleged Macy's pulled some jackets from the Sean John Clothing Inc line because they had been made from faux fur, but investigations revealed that they had been made from Raccoon Dog.
